Wi-Fi troubleshooting & improving performance

Changed your broadband provider or router / password? Read our re-connection guide.

Having trouble with intermittent connection or no Wi-Fi connection at all, read our guide below.

Important Note:

Cord Home EV Chargers can connect to your home Wi-Fi network using a 2.4GHz signal or the included 4G SIM card.

However, if your router broadcasts both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands using the same SSID (network name), you may need to either disable the 5GHz band during setup or split the SSIDs for a smoother installation process. You can read our guide on how to do this here.

Potential Causes of Poor Wi-Fi Signal Strength

Physical Obstructions
Certain materials and objects between your router and your Cord EV Charger can reduce Wi-Fi signal strength. Be mindful of these potential obstacles:

- Thick walls or floors made of concrete, brick, or metal.

- Large household objects like fish tanks, bookcases, or mirrors.

- Large glass surfaces or windows.

- Metal appliances or fixtures.

Electronic Interference
Multiple connected devices in your home, such as TVs, gaming consoles, tablets, computers, smart appliances, or baby monitors, can compete for the Wi-Fi signal and cause interference, reducing your Cord Charger’s performance.

Competing Wi-Fi Networks
If you live in a densely populated area or an apartment building, overlapping Wi-Fi networks can cause interference. You can reduce this by adjusting your router settings, such as changing its broadcast channel. Contact your internet service provider (ISP) or consult your router manual for guidance.

Quick Tips to Improve Wi-Fi Signal Strength

Move the router away from obstructions:
If your router is hidden behind furniture or inside a cupboard, move it to an open location.

Relocate your router:
Ideally, keep your router within 6 meters of the charger.

Adjust the router's antenna:

If your router has an adjustable antenna, experiment with different positions to improve signal strength.

Upgrade your router:

If your router is several years old, consider upgrading it to a newer model for better performance.

Reduce electronic clutter:

Unplug or switch to Ethernet for any unnecessary devices to minimize Wi-Fi congestion.

Minimize interference:

Check if large metal objects (like appliances) or glass containers (like aquariums) are blocking the signal path between the router and your EV charger. Moving these objects can help reduce interference.

Additional Wi-Fi Troubleshooting Tips

Use a Wi-Fi extender:

A Wi-Fi extender can help increase your network’s coverage range if the signal is weak in certain areas. Please note that the extender will need to operate on the 2.4GHz band.

Optimize router settings:

Most routers are designed to automatically switch to the least congested channel. If yours doesn’t, check the manual or contact your ISP to learn how to enable this feature.

Still no luck?

If you're still struggling to get a stable Wi-Fi connection, you can use 4G mode instead. Read our 4G connection guide.
