Installation

You're just a few steps away from home EV charging. Watch our video to find out how.

Installation, positively easy

1. Home survey at a time to suit you

To choose Cord is to choose the simple life.

It means your complicated home survey will be taken care of by one of our UK-wide technicians.

When you purchase your charger, all you need to do is pick a date and time that’s convenient for you, and put your feet up.

2. Installation - usually within 2 weeks

Following your home survey, we aim to have an approved, fully qualified electrician visit your home within 2 weeks.

From connecting your new Cord EV charger to the power supply, to cleaning up the area once installed, the qualified electrician in charge of your installation will work hard to create as little disturbance as possible.

3. Start charging

With your selected Cord EV charger installed, all that’s left to do is pull up, plug in, and relax.

More than 9 in 10 installations are straightforward

Most installations are straightforward. However, if following your home survey any additional work is needed, costs will be shared and agreed prior to your installation - that’s our promise of no unexpected fees.

If you decide that home EV charging is no longer for you following an explanation of any additional work, then we’ll be more than happy to refund you in full.

What to expect from your home survey

Surveying your home is a crucial step to ensure the installation process runs smoothly. Whilst many EV charging brands expect their customers to perform the survey themselves, we’re committed to offering an effortless process. After all, who wants to rummage around a dark cupboard taking photos of the main fuse?

When you purchase your charger, you select a convenient time for your home survey and our surveyor will head over to gather everything they need, including:

  • Preferred location of your Cord electric vehicle charger
  • Incoming power supply
  • Fuse rating
  • Consumer unit make/model
  • Water bonding
  • Gas bonding
  • WiFi signal check
  • Sketch of the site
  • Video showing the route between the main consumer unit or fuse box, and the preferred location for installation
  • Noting other devices that consume power in your home - e.g. power showers, electric hobs etc

What to expect from your installation

Following your survey, we aim to install your charger within 2 weeks. Before we're able to install the charger, we need to apply for approval from your Distribution Network Operator (DNO). Approval is usually granted quickly, but at busier times can take a little longer.

On the day of your installation, one of our friendly electricians will arrive ready to install your Cord EV charger. They’ll arrive with everything they need to get started right away, including the details taken during the home survey.

Whilst we aim to cause as little disturbance as possible during installation, we may have to interrupt your favourite TV show as we switch off the power supply to your home for a short while. This is an essential safety measure that can last a couple of hours, so we’ll give you fair warning to make sure the kettle’s boiled beforehand!

After the power supply is switched back on, our Cord electrician will take care of connecting your brand new charger to your home network, be it via Wifi, or 4G. This will allow remote control and monitoring from the user-friendly smartphone app.

Once your unit is installed, final checks are completed, and you’re ready to charge. All that’s left for us to do is tidy up after ourselves and leave you with a smile on your face!

What's included as standard

We include more for "standard" - which means that more than 9 in 10 of our installations are "standard", without attracting additional costs.

  • An in-person, pre-installation home survey to gather all of the information we need about your property for a hassle-free installation.
  • Up to 30 metres cabling from incoming power supply into your home to your charger - for the vast majority of homes this is more than enough. The charger will be mounted on to a wall.
  • We include and install a surge protection device (SPD) to keep you, your charger and your property safe. Some companies charge up to £100 extra for this critical safety device.
  • The cable will be installed in existing building voids, taking the shortest route defined by the electrician or up to 6m of PVC trunking with a maximum of 4 direction changes, to the exterior of the building or cable clipped direct to the fabric of the building.
  • We install the CT clamp that accompanies the Cord charger. This allows the charger to function correctly with other electrical devices in the home.
  • We register your Cord device so it works with your app.
  • Electrical testing and certification.

What may attract an additional cost:

  • Gas / water bonding rectification / upgrade. This is the most common additional expense, and is an important measure to ensure your charger is installed safely and meets safety and legal requirements. Unfortunately, under regulation we are unable to install a charger without this being in place and to current standards.
  • Additional cabling over 30m - because of the length, this requires a thicker cable and additional labour to install.
  • Non-wall mounting (i.e. post).
  • Unfortunately we are unable to complete significant groundworks (i.e. digging a trench).

Please see our installation FAQs here.

How long does it take?

The installation itself usually takes 3-4 hours.

When you purchase your home charger, you can choose a home-survey date that suits you. These are available within 3 working days.

Once the home survey is completed, we aim to have you up and running within 2 weeks. If you have a more complex installation or live in a remote area this may take a little longer.

If you'd like to know more, please see our detailed installation process guide.
