EV charger installation, without the surprises

Your DNO (Distribution Network Operator) is the company that owns and runs the local electricity network: the cables and substations between the grid and your meter. They're not your energy supplier. Before a charger is installed, the DNO needs to know about it, and sometimes to approve it, because a 7.4kW charger is a significant new load on your supply. We handle the submission and any approval for you as part of the included paperwork. For most homes it's a formality; occasionally the DNO asks for your main fuse to be upgraded first, which is their work to carry out and usually free of charge.

Earth bonding connects your gas and water pipework to your electrical earth: it's a legal requirement for installing an EV charger, as well as for your safety. Most homes have it in place, however if it's missing or if you're in an older property it may need installing or upgrading. It's easy to check yourself: look for a green-and-yellow cable clamped to the pipework near your gas and water meters. If needed, our installers can fit it as part of your installation, quoted and agreed first.

From survey to switch-on is typically 2 to 3 weeks in most regions (see the lead times above for yours), and you choose your preferred installation date when you order. The installation itself takes up to 3 hours, with your power off for up to 60 minutes of that.

Your phone is all you need: a photo of your electricity meter and consumer unit, the spot where you'd like the charger, and the route between the two, plus a note of your wifi signal near the charger location. We'll guide you through it, and if anything needs clarifying we'll call you or hop on a video call.

Just make sure there's clear access to your electricity meter, your consumer unit and the wall where the charger is going. Expect the power to be off for up to 60 minutes while we connect the new circuit. Before we leave, your electrician connects the charger to the Cord app and shows you how it all works.

Usually not. Some homes require a main fuse upgrade or a modification of the incoming power supply into the property before adding a 7.4kW charger. Your survey spots this early, your DNO carries out the work, and it's usually free of charge. If it ever makes the job more than you signed up for, the no quibble guarantee applies as always.
