Installation, positively easy

1. Choose your home survey

To choose Cord is to choose the simple life.

We offer three types of survey. You can choose either a  short virtual (self) home survey, or upgrade to a video or in-person physical home survey completed by one of our UK-wide technicians.

2. Installation - usually within 2 weeks

Following your home survey, we aim to have an approved, fully qualified electrician visit your home within 2 weeks.

From connecting your new Cord EV charger to the power supply, to cleaning up the area once installed, the qualified electrician in charge of your installation will work hard to create as little disturbance as possible.

3. Start charging

With your selected Cord EV charger installed, all that’s left to do is pull up, plug in, and relax.

Around 9 in 10 installations are straightforward

Most installations are straightforward. However, if following your home survey any additional work is needed, costs will be shared and agreed prior to your installation - that’s our promise of no unexpected fees.

If you decide that home EV charging is no longer for you following an explanation of any additional work, then we’ll be more than happy to refund you in full.

You can trust us.

What to expect from your home survey

We offer both virtual (self) surveys and optional video & in-person home surveys. Surveying your home is a crucial step to ensure the installation process runs smoothly. We include the virtual (self) survey as standard, or you can upgrade to a video or in-person home survey during the checkout process when you purchase your charger.

Virtual surveys are completed by using your mobile phone to provide some information about your property and snap a few photos of your home and where you'd like your charger. If you get stuck, don't worry we'll get in touch with you to help.

Our video surveys are carried out by our experts who can guide you through, snapping all the information and photos we need remotely from your phone.

Alternatively, you can put your feet up and one of our UK wide technicians will visit your home to gather everything we need. After all, who wants to rummage around in dark cupboards?

Our home & video surveyors will capture: -

  • Preferred location of your Cord electric vehicle charger
  • Incoming power supply
  • Fuse rating
  • Consumer unit make/model
  • Water bonding
  • Gas bonding
  • WiFi signal check
  • Sketch of the site
  • Video showing the route between the main consumer unit or fuse box, and the preferred location for installation
  • Noting other devices that consume power in your home - e.g. power showers, electric hobs etc

What to expect from your installation

Following your survey, we aim to install your charger within 2 weeks. Before we're able to install the charger, we need to apply for approval from your Distribution Network Operator (DNO). Approval is usually granted quickly, but at busier times can take a little longer.

On the day of your installation, one of our friendly electricians will arrive ready to install your Cord EV charger. They’ll arrive with everything they need to get started right away, including the details taken during the home survey.

Whilst we aim to cause as little disturbance as possible during installation, we may have to interrupt your favourite TV show as we switch off the power supply to your home for a short while. This is an essential safety measure that can last a couple of hours, so we’ll give you fair warning to make sure the kettle’s boiled beforehand!

After the power supply is switched back on, our Cord electrician will take care of connecting your brand new charger to your home network, be it via Wi-Fi, or 4G. This will allow remote control and monitoring from the user-friendly smartphone app.

Once your unit is installed, final checks are completed, and you’re ready to charge. All that’s left for us to do is tidy up after ourselves and leave you with a smile on your face!

What's included as standard

We include more for "standard" including a Surge Protection Device (SPD) - which means that around 9 in 10 of our installations are "standard", without attracting additional costs.

  • Inclusion of a virtual home survey.
  • Up to 15 metres cabling from incoming power supply into your home to your charger - for the vast majority of homes this is more than enough. The charger will be mounted on to a wall.
  • Up to 3m of trunking for any internal cable routes from incoming power supply to EV charger location.
  • Up to 3 hours labour on site - again for the vast majority of homes this is plenty.
  • Installation of a surge protection device (SPD) - worth £69. These are used to protect the charging unit and vehicle against any damage that could be caused by electrical power surges such as lightening strike.
  • The cable will be clipped directly to the wall, taking the shortest route defined by the electrician, passing through one wall.
  • We install the CT clamp that accompanies the Cord charger. This allows the charger to function correctly with other electrical devices in the home.
  • We register your Cord device so it works with your app.
  • Electrical testing and certification.

What may attract an additional cost:

  • In-person or video home surveys.
  • Gas / water bonding rectification / upgrade. This is the most common additional expense, and is an important measure to ensure your charger is installed safely and meets safety and legal requirements. Unfortunately, under regulation we are unable to install a charger without this being in place and to current standards.
  • Additional cabling over 15m & additional trunking over 3m - for the vast majority of homes this is more than enough, however please note cable route meterage includes distances up and down walls (where required), and not just the straight distance between the electrical supply and EV charger.
  • Additional labour over 3 hours.
  • Running a cable at height or complex cable runs - because of the length and weight of the cable this may require additional labour and equipment.
  • Non-wall mounting (i.e. post).
  • Any DNO (Distribution Network Operator) rectification / upgrade works that are out of our control and attract a cost (e.g. unlooping, earthing).
  • Any remedial or rectification works required to ensure compatibility with a pre-existing Solar (PV) and/or battery energy storage systems, e.g. additional CT clamps, configuration.
  • We can complete groundworks (i.e. digging a trench), but these will require a bespoke quotation.

If you think you may need a more complex installation, please feel free to get in touch with us so we can offer advice.

Please see our installation FAQs here.
