Get paid for charging your car

The energy market pays you for charging your car in the cheapest, greenest overnight hours, and Cord Rewards passes a share of that value straight to you.

£

Real cash, not points

Earn up to £144 per year*, with a £5 bonus once you are in. It is paid into your own bank account, not locked away as vouchers or credit.

Set it once, then forget about it

Raya, the smart energy assistant in the Cord app, builds your schedule around the cheapest, cleanest hours of the night. Prefer to stay in control? Pick your own window between 11pm and 6am: the rewards work either way.

A charged car and no change to your energy provider

You still wake up ready to go, and there is no need to switch energy supplier: Cord Rewards works alongside your existing provider, with the rewards on top of what you save by charging overnight.

You are helping the grid too

Charging overnight shifts energy use to the hours when demand is lower and the energy mix is greener. This helps the grid, and that is why you get paid.

How it works, in 3 easy steps

1

Activate in the Cord app

No joining fee, and a £5 welcome bonus lands the day you are in. A few standard checks run first, which can take up to 14 days.

2

Plug in overnight

Set a charging schedule in the app, intelligent or manual, and plug in to charge anytime between the 11pm to 6am window. Then just leave it to do its thing.

3

Watch the cash build

Every qualifying session earns. Once your balance goes above £10, transfer it straight to your own bank account.

What makes a session qualify

  • Scheduled charging only: using boost or instant charge means that session will not qualify
  • Charge overnight, any time between 11pm and 6am
  • At least 5kWh in the session, roughly half an hour or more of charging

Remember: the more you charge, the more you earn.

Where the rewards come from

The UK energy market is changing. As more of us switch to electric cars, the country needs more electricity, so the people who manage the grid will pay you for being flexible about when you charge.

Cord Rewards makes it easy to take part. It unlocks cash payments for charging at quieter, greener times of night, and we take a share of those payments for connecting your charging to the markets and making it all work in the background.

You earn, we grow, and the grid gets an easier ride: less pressure when demand is high, and more clean energy that actually gets used instead of going to waste.

Raya does the thinking for you

Raya is the smart energy assistant in the Cord app. Charge intelligently and she locks in your ready-by times, checks your tariff prices and builds a charging schedule that unlocks rewards automatically, while making sure your car is charged and ready to go.

Prefer to stay in control? Set a manual schedule instead, and Raya will give you personalised recommendations to help you earn more.

Still have questions?

All Cord EV home chargers work with Cord Rewards: the Cord One, Cord Lite and Cord Zero. Our portable chargers and the EVIRA professional charger do not connect to the Cord app, so they cannot take part.

We are rolling Cord Rewards out to all of our new and existing customers over the next few weeks. Hang tight: we will email you as soon as we are ready to enrol you.

Yes. You need a smart meter on half-hourly settlement, which is how the energy market measures when you charge. Do not worry if that sounds technical: we check it for you as part of activation.

To take part, your smart meter needs to be half-hourly settled: your usage is recorded in half-hour blocks rather than as one total, which is how the energy market measures when you charge. Many people are already half-hourly settled, and we check this for you during activation. If not, a quick call or email to your energy provider asking them to change your meter to half-hourly settled is all you need to do. This does not impact your existing energy tariff. For the full picture, read our guide: half-hourly settlement explained.

When you sign up for Cord Rewards, we register your smart meter with Elexon. They help manage the UK's energy markets and make sure things like recording your energy use, matching it to market needs and making payments all run smoothly.

No. Cord Rewards sits alongside your existing supplier and tariff, and if you are on a cheap overnight EV tariff the rewards come on top of those savings. The one exception is smart charging tariffs like Octopus Intelligent Go and OVO Charge Anytime, covered below.

Unfortunately not. These tariffs are themselves a form of flex, the system that allows us to reward you for charging, so the two cannot be combined.

Up to £144 a year, including a £5 welcome bonus once you are set up. Rewards are not guaranteed: they are subject to market conditions and depend on how often you charge overnight. The more qualifying sessions you charge, the more you earn.

Your rewards build in the Cord app, in cash rather than points or vouchers. Once your balance goes above £10, you can transfer it to your own bank account. Linking your bank account is the last step of activation.

A session qualifies when it is scheduled through the app, happens between 11pm and 6am, and delivers at least 5kWh, roughly half an hour or more of charging. Your charger must also be online for sessions to be recorded. Using boost or instant charge means that session will not qualify for that day, so save those for when you really need them.

No. There is no sign up fee and no lock in. You can opt out at any time in the app, and your charger carries on working exactly as before.

Every Rewards question we have ever been asked is answered in the Rewards help centre. And if you need a hand with your account, you can contact the Raya support team directly.

The small print

Earn up to £144 a year

The figure assumes all qualifying charging has been met. It is based on an average weekly charge of around 100kWh into the EV (roughly two full charges), and a reasonable estimate of flexibility value drawn from 6 months of historical wholesale (EPEX) market pricing.

Qualifying charging

Qualifying charging means: using a schedule, either Manual Scheduling mode or Raya Intelligent Scheduling mode; no instant charging sessions; charging between 11pm and 6am; and plugging in regularly. A charging session must deliver at least 5kWh (roughly half an hour or more of charging) before its hours count towards the reward. Short top-ups do not qualify. Earnings, eligibility and terms

Rewards are not guaranteed. The £5 welcome credit, up to £12 a month and up to £144 a year are subject to market conditions and may change over time. To take part you will need an eligible smart meter and a half-hourly settled tariff, and a final check then runs with your meter's data network, which usually takes a few days. See the Flexibility Services and Smart Meter Consent terms, and to see how your data is handled, read the privacy policy.
