Cord Lite 5m: the simple portable granny charger for any 3-pin socket

A portable EV charger, often called a granny charger, is the simplest way to charge: plug the 3-pin into any standard UK socket, the Type 2 into your car, and you're charging at 2.3kW. No installation, no electrician, no waiting. Five metres suits a socket close to where you park.

The Cord Lite is built like charging equipment should be: capped at 10A in line with UK electrical regulations for safe, continuous use, with over-voltage, under-voltage and over-temperature protection built in, and IP65 water resistance for British weather. It's ideal for plug-in hybrids, second cars and holidays, comes with a carry bag, and is covered by a 1 year warranty.

Need more reach? See the Cord Lite 10m. Want programmable charging? Step up to the Cord Plus 5m.

Not sure which length? 5m suits a socket close to where you park. 10m reaches from a garage or hallway socket across the drive. 15m covers parking well away from the socket. Measure from the socket to your car's charging port, and allow for whether you reverse in or park nose-first.The Cord team

Safety first, by design

A granny charger lives on a domestic socket, so we build in the protection that cheap portable chargers skip.

Capped at 10A, deliberately

In line with UK electrical regulations for safe, continuous charging from a domestic socket.

Over and under-voltage protection

Monitors the supply and cuts charging if the voltage is unsafe.

Over-temperature protection

Temperature sensors in both the charger and the 3-pin plug watch for heat build-up and stop charging before it becomes a problem.

IP65 water resistant

Sealed against rain and dust, with IK10 impact protection.

−25°C to +45°C

Charges outdoors in UK weather, all year round.

Warranty as standard

1 year on Cord Lite, 3 years on Cord Plus, with UK-based support.

Why buy a Cord portable charger?

A portable charger plugs into a domestic socket every day, so build quality is a safety matter, not a luxury. Here's how Cord compares to a typical budget granny charger.

Portable granny charger or dedicated wallbox?

They do different jobs. A portable charger is instant and goes anywhere; a wallbox is faster and built for every day.

Cord untethered wallbox EV charger in black For everyday EV charging

Dedicated wallbox

  • Around 3x faster. 7.4kW for a full charge overnight, every night.
  • Built for daily use. Professionally installed on its own circuit.
  • Smart charging. Scheduling and cheap overnight EV tariffs cut your cost per mile.
  • Fixed to your home. Higher upfront cost including installation.

Our honest advice: if you charge several times a week, a wallbox will serve you better and cost less to run. For plug-in hybrids and occasional charging, a portable charger is often all you need. Read the full comparisonThe Cord team
